Are Gel Blasters Legal?

With airsoft and paintball guns being banned or otherwise heavily regulated in most countries, it’s only natural to question the legality of gel blasters; a new type of toy gun.

A gel blaster is a revolutionary toy gun that is designed to shoot water-based gel pellets that are similar to Orbeez. They use rechargeable batteries to propel these pellets through the barrel, much like some types of airsoft guns. And like paintball guns, gel blasters shoot projectiles that burst upon impact.

However, gel blasters are considered much safer than paintball and airsoft guns. With that being said, are gel blasters legal? Or are they subject to regulation like in most countries?

Let’s find out.

So, Are Gel Blasters Legal?

Yes, gel blasters are 100% legal in the United States. Although they share some similarities with heavily regulated toy guns like paintball guns and BB guns, gel blasters do not have the same potential to cause harm. This is mainly because of the type of projectiles that gel blasters use, which are super-absorbent water beads that have little to no risk of causing an injury.

Another question that many people have about these toy guns is “do gel blasters hurt?” Well, getting hit by gel blaster ammo can sting, but the pain is often described as similar to a rubber band snapping on your skin. In other words, the sting is very minor; just enough to keep your game exciting.

Because of this, gel blasters are the perfect alternatives to paintball and BB guns. Aside from causing little to no pain, gel blasters also do not leave residue (on clothes, skin, the environment, etc.) and are completely eco-friendly.

Reminder: If you are unsure of the legality of gel blasters in your country, be sure to check your local toy gun legislation.

Gel Blasters Are Legal - But Still Follow These Safety Tips

Are gel blasters legal? Yes, definitely. But are they 100% safe? No toy gun ever is! With that being said, here are some of the most important safety tips to keep in mind while playing with gel blasters:

Keep Gel Blaster Guns In Your Backyard or A Safe Area - Not A Public Park

Gel blasters come in all sorts of designs, and like other toy guns, gel blasters can be made to look like real guns. So, if your gel blaster looks like a real firearm, it is best to keep your games inside the backyard or a private area (even if your gel blaster has an orange tip). Using these toy guns in public can scare people who don’t know any better, and this could lead to unnecessary encounters with law enforcement (and maybe a fine!)

It is also important to note that while gel blasters do not hurt that much, they can still sting. That said, it would be wholly inappropriate to play in the presence of strangers, especially if there are very young children around.

Do Not Alter Your Gel Blaster Gun

Gel blasters do not possess the same firing power as paintball guns and airsoft guns, and this is what makes them so safe to play with. However, some people see this as an invitation to modify their gel blaster in order to make it more powerful.

If you wish to do the same to your gel blaster, this may lead you to ask: can gel blasters shoot BBs? Yes, indeed, they can. But you would be ruining your gel blaster in the process; gel blasters are designed to shoot only gel blaster ammo–not BBs.

More importantly, modifying your gel blaster to make it more powerful is illegal. If you are caught using a modified gel blaster, you could face a hefty fine and, of course, confiscation of your gel blaster.

Wear The Proper Safety Gear

The sting from getting hit by gel blaster ammo does not warrant any protective clothing. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to cover your skin with long-sleeved shirts and pants if you want to lessen the sting. This is especially recommended for young children and people with sensitive skin.

However, one thing that you cannot do without is a pair of protective goggles. Gel blaster ammo does not hurt that much when it hits the skin, but getting hit in the eye can cause serious injuries. With that in mind, always wear protective goggles while playing with gel blasters. Luckily, each one of our gel blaster packs comes with a pair of goggles so that you don’t have to worry about buying them separately.

Do Not Aim For The Head

While shooting each other with gel blasters, avoid aiming for the head. The skin on the face is often more sensitive than that of the rest of the body, which is why it tends to hurt more when you get hit by a gel bead in the face. Furthermore, it is important to avoid shooting in any orifices on the head, such as the ears, eyes, nostrils, and mouth to prevent water from ending up where it’s not supposed to be.

Are Gel Blasters Legal? Final Thoughts

Gel blasters are legal, safe, and always a blast to play with. To keep things that way, always remember these tips:

  • Keep the gel blaster battles in the backyard or in a safe, private space
  • Never alter your gel blaster; this includes using different ammo
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants if needed
  • Always keep your safety goggles on while playing
  • Avoid aiming for the head, especially the eyes, nose, ears, and mouth
